Fancy a taster day?

Are you interested in hang gliding? Then sign up for a taster course at an SHV flying school. You can find a list of all SHV flying schools here, or select the school in the desired region on the map.

Practice hill

During the first few days you will be on the practice slope. Here you will familiarise yourself with your paraglider or delta, learn how to take off and land and make your first small flights.
During the next learning phase, "high altitude flights", ground handling should also be practised again and again; this is then done increasingly playfully and can therefore be really fun. A school that regularly uses ground handling to improve individual pilot skills demonstrates quality and guarantees a high level of active pilot safety.

High-altitude flight

Under the supervision of your instructor, you will complete your first high-altitude flights - initially always with direct radio contact to your instructor.

For each flight you will receive a flight assignment from your instructor. In this way, you will complete all flight manoeuvres during your training in accordance with the SHV control sheet.

As you gain experience, you will be given more and more responsibility by your instructor and will gradually be prepared for your future independence as a certified pilot. At the end of this process and when you are ready for the exam, you will complete a supervised independent high flight, which will be monitored by your instructor by means of briefing and contact options, but will no longer be directly supervised.

Theoretical exam

During your training, you will learn the theoretical basics from your instructor on course evenings and in the field. You can take the actual exam at some point during your training. It includes the following five subjects:

  • Flight theory
  • Material knowledge
  • Flight practice
  • Meteo
  • Legislation

Practical exam

To register for the practical exam, you need at least 50 altitude flights in 5 different flight areas (paraglider) or 30 altitude flights in 3 different flight areas (delta). The following points will be assessed during the exam:

  • Launch preparation
  • Launch
  • Flight programme
  • Landing approach
  • Landing

Requirements

  • Minimum age 14 years for training flights / theoretical exam
  • Minimum age 16 years for the practical examination
  • up to 16 years only with the consent of the legal guardian

Choosing the right flight school

You have decided to spread your wings and fly? Choosing a flying school that suits you is an important factor in obtaining your licence.
Questions that can help you:

  • Is the school SHV-approved?
  • Does the training take place at the weekend or during the whole week?
  • Every flying school has its own unique style. Check with alumni and feel free to check out different flight schools before you decide!
