Release 7 April 2026 – PREVIEW
New SHPA app now available – preview version ensures seamless weather information
The new SHPA app is now available! With this first preview version, the association is ensuring that pilots can continue to access reliable weather information – even after the previous SHPA weather page is taken offline. As MeteoSwiss is soon to cease production of the previous graphics as part of its Open Government Data initiative, a swift, modern solution was required. The preview app was developed in just three months, fills this gap and simultaneously lays the foundation for the comprehensive association app, which will be released in the summer.
For licensing reasons, the gliding weather report will remain accessible via the existing SHPA weather page until the summer and will not yet be available in the app.
Why a new app?
The SHPA aims to make important information for paragliding and hang-gliding easier to access, more up-to-date and available to members. In parallel with the nationwide digitisation of flying areas, a modern mobile platform is therefore being created which bundles weather data, safety information and, in future, flying area data within a single system.
What does the Preview app offer?
The version now released deliberately focuses on weather features that are crucial for sound flight planning. These include:
- Measurement data from a growing network of weather stations (only a few are currently available)
- High-resolution wind forecasts for the next five days
- Pressure differences and additional foehn indicators
- Webcams at relevant locations
- Europe-wide maps showing temperature, theta-E and pressure fields
- Focus on Switzerland with radar, precipitation, cloud cover and wind forecasts
- Precipitation probabilities and relative sunshine duration for flight day planning
- Emagrams and other forecasting tools for assessing challenging weather conditions
The app is available in multiple languages and can be used without logging in until the summer. After that, the forecast data will only be accessible to SHV members. The flying areas and live data will remain publicly accessible.
Final association app in summer
The current version is a preview of the final app, which will be released in summer 2026. This will also include:
- Gliding weather report
- Complete flying area data, including status, current conditions, obstacles and more.
- Member data and personalised features
- Further safety-related content
The preview now released enables us to gather feedback at an early stage and further develop the app optimally for the summer. Feedback can be sent at any time to app(at)shv-fsvl.ch.
